Zaeed's comment when you recruit Garrus is something like "Archangel and me wanted the same thing-a whole lot of dead mercs." This indicates he does not consider himself to be a "merc," at least not in the sense of the Blood Pack/Blue Suns/Eclipse. My take is that Zaeed was once something of an idealist, or at least a person with a very strong sense of right and wrong, who has been worn down and battered by a shitty life until he can barely recognize the concepts, but he still strives to keep trying to be who he was.Įvidence for this character interpretation:
